5 practical things you can do to help decrease workplace stress

Stress is a very natural component of our lives, both at home and at work. With more awareness, studies and training being given to the topic, we are getting better at understanding triggers to stress and also how to alleviate the impact it has on us.

Many studies have been conducted that indicate that stress is on the rise, therefore having the chance to find a low-stress level role might be more challenging than you think, however, there are coping mechanisms you can implement into the day that will reduce stress levels as well as keep you mentally and physically healthy.

This article is a list of five practical things you can do today to help decrease workplace stress. As recruiters, we work in an environment of immense highs and very low lows, almost on a daily basis. This constant rollercoaster of emotion combined with the pressures of KPIs and dealing with a ‘product’ that has a mind of its own is a breeding ground for stress triggers, therefore these practical tips have been tried and tested by us and we are confident they will be transferable to you.


Seek Support

We know, this is a lot easier said than done but really it is one of the most important steps you can take if you have lingering stress that you simply cannot rid.

Seeking support from friends, peers, family or even an external community could be the remedy you need. Talking about the issue out loud could help formulate the correct response, you might also find out that others in your network have experienced or are experiencing the same problem, expanding your ideas on how to best tackle your stress.


Improve your nutritional intake

The food we consume has a direct impact on how our bodies respond to situations throughout the day. Sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and carbs in excessive quantities are damaging to our physical and mental health making us more susceptible to stress triggers and the negative ways of dealing with them.

Making better and healthier choices when it comes to nutrition will allow your mind and body to become clearer in thought, allowing you to tackle stress triggers from a more energised state, ridding them or at least finding the solution quicker.


Get your 8 hours

Working longer when you are stressed is not the answer, no matter how behind you are. Working later or skipping breaks to ‘catch up’ during a period of stress will very quickly become the new norm. This constant pressure on your body and mind will one day result in breakage.

Reduce labour-intensive activities before bed, or anything that might put your mind into overdrive (reading emails for example) and set yourself a bedtime to create a routine.


Organise your life

Learn to organise your life and find the right rhythm for work and social that is right for you. Do you find yourself more as a morning person or night owl? Do you work best with a to-do list or a diary?

Finding the right structure to organise your life will allow you to plan more effectively and become more productive with your day.

Look for meaning in your work

Meaning is everything. Why do you do what you do, what is the meaning of your life, more specifically what is the meaning in your work?

Finding meaning, and a mission you can truly get behind is incredibly important if you find yourself unchallenged or uninterested in your work. Not having something you are truly excited to get out of bed for, something that is bigger than just you or a salary might be the root cause as to why you are feeling stressed, and if this is the case then a change of roles might be the best form of action.


Stress in the workplace flares up when we either feel like the work is swallowing us whole (seeking support or organising your life will help here), or we feel we are not challenged enough in our day-to-day tasks (looking for meaning in your work will be your aid here). Whatever the reason, these 5 tips have personally helped us, and we live by them day to day.

The amazing thing about this field of study however is that there is still so much more to learn. Use these tips as a starting point, explore other articles and dive into research papers, learn how you can live with stress in the right way, as already mentioned it is on the rise and almost present in nearly all jobs in some form or another.
