LinkedIn has become the dominant professional social network, with well over 500 million accounts registered to the site, across practically all countries. The site is the most preferred platform for sharing business related content and with over 40 million of it’s 500 million users being decision makers and a further 60 million holding executive level roles, creating a personal brand on LinkedIn can really help open doors, make meaningful connections and elevate your career to places previously unattainable.
With any marketing exercise, you need to identify who you target audience will be. LinkedIn algorithms simply won’t show everyone’s posts in your network on your feed, and it will be the same for your connections. The more an individual engages in your content through likes, comments and shares, the more frequently they will see your content.
This is why it is critical before you start, you know who you are making content for.
Are you searching for a job?
Then maybe tailor content that will attract the eyes of hiring managers and/or recruiters.
Are you looking to gather B2B leads?
Then consider the industry and decision makers you are targeting and start speaking in their language.
Are you looking to expand your professional network openly?
Then maybe use the site less rigid and show your personality through your content more.
Whatever your purpose is for using LinkedIn, being an active member as previously mentioned will help generate an abundance of new connections, opportunities and links for you in your career. Once you have identified your target audience, you need to consider the content you want to create and this is what the remainder of this article will focus on.
The ideas generated here have personally helped us engage more with our networks, build stronger connections and ultimately lead to business opportunities that have converted into long-term relationships… as you read them, we hope you will realise how simple content can truly be but when done correctly and consistently with a plan, how effective it can be.
Native Video
Use your phone, a camera or a video recorder to create native video content that can be uploaded directly onto LinkedIn. Native video is a great way to boost engagement and gain new followers, and it doesn’t need to break your budget either.
A simple interview, recap or animation can be all you need to start you on your way.
Plan Text
Less visually appealing but still highly effective for its speed and simplicity. Using plan text, structured with line breaks and if relevant to your audience, emojis can help engage with your audience who might not be able or willing to watch video content.
Asking open questions, sharing your thoughts, offering market knowledge are all great things to talk about with plain text.
LinkedIn Poll
A more recent feature on LinkedIn is their ‘poll’ tool which offers you the chance to pose a question with a specific set of answers, allowing your audience to openly engage with a simple click of a button.
This feature is fantastic to not only engage with your audience but to also gather data. We often pose polls to our networks and then reuse that data in B2B topical conversations to educate the end client.
LinkedIn polls are widely used these days, therefore if you intent to post one, we advise having a real reason otherwise it might be construed as spam.
Blog
LinkedIn has had a blog feature for many years, some (like us) opt to post our articles on our own sites but you could post a blog directly to your LinkedIn and continue to drive your intended audience to your LinkedIn profile.
Blogs containing long-form content, images and quotes are great for sharing in-depth market information and technical knowledge but also a good way to show a little more about who you are and what you find important.
Third-part Content
Third-party content is in abundance on LinkedIn. Any post you see, that is not yours will be considered third-party. Re-sharing posts from reputable companies and individuals or sharing content from third-party websites of similar standard is a very easy way to start sharing content.
However we do advise against only using third-party content, a personal brand will be built quicker with unique content and not just third-party.
Illustrations / Photos
A cheaper and less time consuming but still eye-popping form of content when created in the right way is illustrations and photography. Authentic images, overlaid with call-to-action text, work wonders on LinkedIn. They have the capacity to stop the user mid-scroll and can aid information retention for your personal brand as you continue to grow.
Remember, LinkedIn like any social platform will take time to build. Creating engaging content using any of the above areas we have discussed, or better yet a combination of them all will help push your brand to new heights and attract new followers, new opportunities and new connections.
