The job search process is unique to everyone but for some it can be a long, stressful journey filled with rejections, set-backs and the never-ending waiting game. It is no surprise that this can easily lead to burnout which makes the whole search even more difficult as motivation and focus slips.

We appreciate that when you are in the thick of a search it can be tough to simply ‘stay positive’ as countless others have preached, however it is essential that you keep moving forward, no matter the pace during these challenging times.

What exactly is job search burnout?

It is the condition where you experience emotional, physical and mental exhaustion as a result of a prolonged and unsuccessful job search. You might feel overwhelmed, frustrated, demotivated due to the uncertainties of your job search. If left unchecked it can decrease your productivity, focus and overall attitude towards finding a new job.

Take a step back

Burnout of any type can be draining both mentally and physically. Although it might not feel like it at the time when you feel overwhelmed but taking a step back, and more specifically taking a break can help you recharge and come back to the task at hand with a new perspective.

This is something we advocate in general, not only when you feel burnt out. Whether it be a day, weekend or week, a break is very good for the mind.

Reassess your goals

Job search burnout might be caused from unrealistic goals you have set yourself. It is certainly acceptable to be ambitious with your search, however review often to allow for pivots, this will help reduce burnout when goals are not achieved.

Whenever you are setting any type of goal, remember to follow SMART. Your goal should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

By following this formula, you will minimise unrealistic goals by ensuring they are achievable.

Celebrate the small wins

It might seem silly at first but find a way to get excited about anything and everything from an interview through to a new connection or even actionable feedback.

Even better, write the win down in a journal allowing you to reflect whenever you might be having a low moment to give yourself a boost of motivation.

Have a support bubble

We always say that a job search is individual, no two process will ever be the same, not because processes change but the conversations that take place within them can divert into so many areas.

Due to this nature, the process can be lonely at times. Especially if you are running your search without the help of a recruiter.

Having a support bubble around you during any job search allows for ideas, thoughts, worries, wins and anything else to be shared. Simply having someone to talk to can lift your mood and give you the energy to tackle the next task.

If you haven’t already, we would advise seeking support from a recruiter within your niche, even if they do not have an opening for you right now they can offer guidance into the market and be a source of support when you need it.

It can be challenging admitting that you might be experiencing job search burnout, so instead of labelling it at this moment in time, try to implement some of these tips to simply help you in your journey.
