What Is the 7-Second CV Test? How to Pass Recruiter CV Screening

7 second CV test example showing how recruiters scan CVs quickly

The 7-second CV test is a widely shared idea in recruitment: that recruiters spend just a few seconds scanning your CV before deciding whether to keep reading. You’ve probably seen the stat floating around, and honestly? We’re not entirely sure where that number came from. At Peritus Partners, we spend far longer getting to know the people we work with.

But… let’s entertain it.

Because whether it’s 7 seconds, 15 seconds, or 30 the reality is the same: first impressions on your CV happen fast.

And if you don’t pass that initial scan, the rest of your experience might never get seen.

Why this matters (even if 7 seconds isn’t exact)

Reading that might feel frustrating.

You could spend hours crafting your CV or prompting AI to get it just right only for someone to skim it in a few seconds.

But here’s the reality:

Most companies receive hundreds of applications per role. Sometimes thousands.

That means hiring teams have to make quick decisions. Not final decisions but quick “yes/no/maybe” calls on whether to keep reading.

Your job? Make sure your CV gives them a reason to continue.

We don’t fully agree… but we get it

We don’t believe great hiring decisions should be made in seconds.

But we do understand how modern hiring works especially with the rise of AI and high application volumes.

And while we’d love for every application to get deep attention, the truth is: many won’t.

So if you’re applying broadly (and you should be), you need a CV that performs well in that first quick scan.

How to pass the 7 second test

Keep it short (but not too short)

CV length has been debated for years.

One page? Two pages? Five pages if you’ve “done a lot”?

We sit somewhere in the middle:

  • 2 pages is the sweet spot for most people

  • 3 pages max if you have extensive experience

Too short, and you risk underselling yourself. Too long, and you lose the reader before they find the good stuff.

The goal isn’t just brevity it’s clarity.

White space matters. Readability matters. A clean, well-spaced CV will always outperform a dense wall of text.

Use a logical format

In a 7-second scan, structure is everything.

If a recruiter can’t quickly understand your career story, they’ll move on.

Keep it simple:

  • Reverse chronological order (most recent first)

  • Clear section headers

  • Consistent formatting throughout

Your most recent experience should do the heavy lifting. That’s what recruiters care about most so make it easy to find, and easy to digest.

Give them a reason to stop scrolling

The 7-second test isn’t about reading everything.

It’s about spotting something that makes the reader pause.

That could be:

  • A relevant tech stack

  • A recognisable company

  • A strong project outcome

  • A clear progression story

Tailoring your CV helps massively here.

You don’t need to rewrite everything for every application, but small tweaks highlighting relevant experience, adjusting wording, surfacing the right projects can make a big difference.

And yes, keywords matter.

Not in a “buzzword bingo” way but in a way that clearly signals: this person understands the space we operate in.

Avoid the waffle

One of our favourite phrases: avoid the waffle.

Your CV is prime real estate.

Every line should earn its place.

If something doesn’t add value to your application remove it.

  • Generic responsibilities? Cut or tighten them

  • Repetition? Remove it

  • Fluff? Definitely remove it

Focus on impact, not just activity.

And before you start applying, get a second pair of eyes on it. Friends, peers, recruiters — fresh perspective always helps.

Try it yourself

Before you leave this page, try something.

Pause.

Count to 7.

Seriously, do it.

That’s how long you might have to make an impression.

Quick, right?

Final thought

Your CV doesn’t need to tell your whole story.

It just needs to do one thing well: Get someone to keep reading.

Keep refining it. Keep testing it. And if you need a second opinion, reach out  we’re always happy to help.

And if this helped you, share it with someone else who’s currently job hunting.
