Finding your purpose

The Dalai Lama once said: Through money or power you cannot solve all problems. The problem in the human heart must be solved first.

We work our jobs expecting to reach fulfilment instead of focusing on our true passions and turning them into our careers.

We live the dreams instilled onto us from our parents, schools and leaders.

We drive to the office to earn a living only to spend that living on the car that we are still paying off, a house that remains empty all day, clothes that conform but not represent us and vacations that dictate how much ‘down’ time we are allowed.

We work all day every day, Monday to Friday and sometimes more. We wish our lives away five days a week only to forget the last two as the week, ends.

Stephen Covey said that most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.

95% of us are working for the 5% and yet we still think we are following our purpose.

There has to be more to life than this, right?

Finding your purpose is daunting but liberating. The process can be tough for some and easy for others but in the end, it gives your life a meaning, a true why, an absolute focus. Try out the steps below that helped us find our purpose but remember to review it regularly to maintain focus and clarity.

Write down what you are passionate about

We all have things that we are interested in or curious about that add passion and real excitement to our lives. These are the topics of conversation that when someone brings them up (usually you) you cannot help but explain everything you know surrounding it, for some this could be the environment or personal development and for others it could be neuroscience or film.

Whatever this is for you write them down.

What are you good at?

Everyone has a set of skills that are unique to them, skills that we acquired throughout school and improve upon through adulthood that shape who we are. With your passion topics in mind, think about what you are specifically good at, how can you use the skills you already have to impact these passions?

You might be a highly engaging speaker that is destined to stand on a stage and present your ideas or you might be an analytical thinker who is able to crunch and make sense of data. Personally, for us, we are passionate about recruitment, education and community and as a result launched a recruitment agency dedicated to tackling each of these topics in our own way.

Create your WHY statement

Simon Sinek’s book, Start With Why, describes it effortlessly. People buy into other people’s WHYs not there HOWs or WHATs. The same goes with your purpose, make sure you are 100% certain of WHY you are set out for this purpose.

The statement should be long enough to encompass your strongest passion but short enough so that you can remember it off the top of your head.

Develop yourself every day to support your purpose

Having a solid understanding of what you are passionate about, what skills you currently have and why you must foster a growth mindset

Every great leader, entrepreneur or figure head all continued to develop themselves throughout their lives, they never stopped pursuing perfection and as a result, their purposes were felt far and wide.

Martin Luther King, Jr famously said ‘I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character.’

King was an American Baptist minister and activist, his WHY was very clear but his personal development and progression to become the spokesman and leader in the civil rights movement was what made his name go down in the history books, he never stopped being the very best he could be and we can see that in the actions that he took.

Fully live your purpose and do not let others stop you

We are in complete control of three things in our lives:

                The words we speak

                The thoughts we think

                The images we project in our minds

You have a purpose in life, never stop trying to find out what that is and once you do, never let it go. How you choose to live your life is completely your decision, your purpose will reflect who you really are, interests will change over time but true passion will prevail.
